Our Research Initiatives

gsaREACH designs, develops and conducts research projects to provide information, analysis, options and recommendations to government and private sector clients.

Our approach to research is collaborative, client-centered, and interdisciplinary, and uses multiple modes of inquiry. We actively seek partnerships with other professionals, schools, and agencies who are able to assist.

Bona Fide Occupational Requirements

Working with physically demanding occupations to identify bona fide occupational requirements (BFOR’s), select essential physical abilities, design and validate bona fide occupational requirement tests for recruits and incumbents. Work to date has been primarily in police services.

Example: Anderson, G.S., D.B. Plecas and T. Segger. Police officer physical abilities testing: Re-validating a selection criterion. Policing: An International Journal of Police Strategies & Management.24(1): 8-31, 2001.

Law Enforcement

Working with a breadth of clients in law enforcement, research has involved validating BFOR’s, examining physical and psycho-social stress, and exploring health and safety concerns such as use of force, communications and emergency light use and color.

Example: Anderson, G.S., D.B. Plecas, and R. Litzenberger. Physical evidence of police officer stress. Policing: An International Journal of Police Strategies & Management. 25: 399-420, 2002.

Working to develop a new training paradigm for athletes engaged in multi-directional sports that incorporates unstable surfaces, vision and proprioception; to develop a non-age based classification system for sports participation in contact and power sports; working with individuals and teams for preparation for major games (ie. World Cup, Olympics) consulting on training and periodization, travel, heat acclimation and pollution.

Example: Norwood, J., G.S. Anderson, M. Gaetz, and P. Twist. Electromyographic activity of trunk stabilizers during stable and unstable bench press. Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. 21(2): 343-347, 2007.

Product Development

Working with private companies on the development of, and/or efficacy of using new products in fitness training and personal protective clothing; using this knowledge as a professional witness as required.

Example: Bernhardt, T. B. and G.S. Anderson. Influence of moderate prophylactic compression on sport performance. Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. 19(2): 292-297, 2005.
