What is the PARE?
“The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) is an occupational test used to assess a person’s ability to perform the physical demands of police work”. (PARE Administrator Manual – April 2008, pg. 3) It is not considered as a fitness test.
History
The PARE was developed based on initial scientific research conducted by Mr. Doug Farenholtz. It was not until 1988 that the PARE was widely used a part of the selection process for the RCMP.
Layout
The PARE consists of three stations:
- An obstacle course, in which you need to perform 6 laps (total of 340 m).
- A push/pull station, in which you need to lift 70 lbs*, completing six arcs of 180o for both the push and pull, separated by 4 controlled falls.
- A bag carry, in which you need to lift and carry 80lbs* for 15m.
Stations #1 and #2 must be completed within the 4:45min* time limit. Station 3 must be completed within 2 minutes of station #2.
*These standards are for RCMP applicants only, not regular members of the RCMP.
Training
As the PARE indirectly evaluates strength, muscular endurance and stamina, flexibility, cardio vascular endurance, power, agility and speed, balance / coordination, proper training is essential. Please follow the link to find out more information.
